Russian music had a lot of popular genres.

Russian folk is the oldest form of music in Russia. It began way back when Slavic tribes first settled that region. It is passed down from generation to generation, always keeping the spirit of the love of music and dancing with it.

Here's a Russian folk song.

The Classical music of Russia was also popular. Many of the masters, from Tchaikovksy to Stravinsky, are still heard today, their music as inspiring and ethereal now as it was when it was first heard hundreds of years ago. The Five relied on orientalism as a way to not be as germanic sounding. This is Rimsky-Korsakov's Symphony No. 2 dubbed Antar.

Russia also had opera, which is as well known as the operas of Europe such as Italy and Germany. The Golden age of Russian Opera began in the 19th century, which probably had a lot of significance due to the time period and a way to "distract" from the world for a short while. Here is an aria from Tchaikobsky's "The Queen of Spades."

Because the Soviet era cracked down on things that were seen as against the views of the Soviet Union, Rock music; which originated from the West, started out as an  underground thing. Now its more public. This is an example of a Russian rock song.

Music changes with the time. This is made evident.
